Ms. Kendall’s Fifth Grade

Pupil Readiness Enrichment Program (P.R.E.P.)

January 14, 2005

Dear Parents,

The second semester begins the transition from elementary standards to middle school expectations. Truly, this can be a scary process for students as they begin to experience physical, social, and academic changes. It is important that we work together to ensure that your child gains a level of independence, social confidence, and mastery of skills to make him/her prepared for the challenges of the following year. In order to enhance learning and begin preparation for the 5th grade, my class will be involved in Fifth Grade P.R.E.P (Pupil Readiness Enrichment Program).

I will access your child’s current progress from the first semester (Aug.-Dec. 2003) and establish goals and/or areas of improvement for the remainder of the school year (Jan. –May 2004). Some assignments, like composition (handwriting and journals), will be longer to evaluate your child’s understanding of the writing process. In addition, you will see more quizzes of basic arithmetic (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Finally, my language arts students will continue working on their unit learning projects which helps them to understand their value to the community and the world in which they live.

Please understand three (3) key elements:

  1. This process will not alter the curriculum, but allows the student, parents, and the teacher to work closely on skills that are needed for the fifth grade.
  2. This process is not designed to increase workload for students or parents.
  3. This process WILL establish clear goals to assist your child in personal, social, and academic growth.

I am excited about this program, especially since it focuses my students on their specific needs and more importantly, builds confidence on their academic and social performance. I ask for your support; as well as, your suggestions/feedbacks during this time! Please review your child’s P.R.E.P. sheet and return.
