Communications

Reading, Language, Spelling, and Handwriting are all included under "Communications". Each year, there is a strong demand for students to excel in this area. I am requiring that students in my reading class have a library card from the Nashville Public Library. This is essential in order for the students to meet the requirement of reading one (1) book each six weeks.

The Blue Book Use this site to find the answers to your questions concerning proper English grammar and punctuation.

Contractions This is a nice practice worksheet on contractions. The main site also provide other subject resources.

Grammar Central will help you understand subject-verb agreement.

Grammar Gorillas Impress these gorillas with your knowledge of the part of speech.

Handwriting4Kids This site provides worksheet and practice guides for students learning to write.

Mrs. Dowling's Grammar Rules - Capitalization Rules Capitalizing proper nouns is covered, with examples given. There is a printable quiz as well as an online quiz to take.

Nouns “A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.” Proper nouns, noun clauses, and noun phrases are discussed.

Phrasal Verbs "Phrasal Verbs" is a game for practicing verbs. The player chooses a topic and then matches the verb, particle and meaning. If the correct answer is chosen a point is scored. Requires Shockwave to play.

Predicates, Objects, Complements “A predicate is the completer of a sentence.” There are examples of the proper use of predicates on this page.

Sentence Subjects “The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing or being something.” There is a quiz at the end to see if you can “Identifying Simple and Compound Subjects.”

StuFun.com This is an excellent site that provides interactive grammar games for students. 

Word Class: Nouns The types of nouns including proper, common, concrete, and abstract are explored in this paper.

Mathematics is a key mastery subject because each skill is a foundation to a second skill. The links provided below will assist the student in mastering skills for math. Please make sure that the student refers to classroom notes when completing homework.

Exploring Place-Value Relationships is designed for students to learn place value in standard and word form.

Flash Cards for Kids lets you practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You can keep up with your score as you submit your answers.

Sylvan Park is participating in the K-6 Hands-On Science Curriculum. This means that students will receive four (4) hands-on science kits lessons and four (4) mini-units of science. This curriculum is not broken down into six weeks intervals, but four cycles. Please review the chart below to see which cycle, kit, and mini-unit your child will be using for this six weeks:
